What Are Skunks?
Although some of them are brown or cream-colored, skunks are mainly black and white.
Their size can range from 15 to 37 inches, weighing up to 18 lbs.
What They Eat
A skunk’s diet consists of plant and animal material depending on the season of the year. They eat insects, snakes, birds, and moles, as well as berries, leaves, and grass.
Their Habits
Skunks mate in early spring and usually have four to seven kits. They use their sharp claws to make burrows in the ground or use man-made holes for their homes. During the winter, they use these burrows as well. They don’t truly hibernate. Instead, they come out every so often to feed.
As Predators
Honey bees are the prey of skunks. Their thick fur blocks the stings. And this allows them to scratch at the front of the beehive and eat the guard bees. Of course, they also teach their kits to do the same.
A Skunk’s Not-So-Secret Weapon
Most people are familiar that skunks have chemicals that they spray for protection as a last resort. They only have enough of this chemical for five or six uses. It takes them about 10 days to produce more. Other ways skunks threaten other animals in defense are by hissing, foot-stamping, and high-tail postures before spraying.
